Diwali is known as festival of lights. It is celebrated by nearly all religions in India. Basically it is the victory of good over evil/ light over dark. Clay lamps are lit to denote the light removing the darkness. This festival is as big in significance as Christmas is to many people. The day after Diwali or sometimes 2 days after Diwali, is the New Year for many indians. It is celebrated with families coming together, lot of good food, new clothes, fireworks. 

The way I look at it is we are influenced by two major forces in our life. One of the major forces is aligned with the positive energies/ divine forces and the other is aligned with negative energies / non-divine energies. And there is constant battle/ war  between the two forces going on within us. 

Each night you can review your day and figure out who won the war that day. Did you align more with positive side or did you align more with the negative forces.
