  • Want to be happy? Here are some tips.

    Happiness is something everyone wants and yet we find that we spend most of our day worrying about things or being unhappy. We do have moments of happiness but they are just moments. What can we do to be happy?

    "Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your actions".  This was written by a young boy who visited my office and wrote on my office board. He wrote other quotes on happiness as well and that got me thinking of writing a newsletter on it.

    The major problem in being happy is our perceptions and beliefs. Most everyone believes their happiness lies in the actions of others and unhappiness likewise. They give away their power of happiness to others. You are happy when your kids are happy or your spouse gets you flowers or your manager gives you a promotion or you get an unexpected gift from someone. You are unhappy because your manager is mean, spouse/partner  is hurtful, children are not doing what you want them to do, your colleague is playing politics with you, your car broke down and so on and so forth. If you give your reins of happiness to others than you are at the mercy of others to make you happy. You lose control on your life. 

    It's time to take back control in your hands. "If you want to be happy, be". Another quote on my board. Find ways to do things that make you happy during the day. Your happiness is your responsibility. It is not the responsibility of others to make you happy. It is your state of mind that creates happiness or unhappiness. Yes, your conscious mind which is barely 10% of your brain power makes you think otherwise. It loves to rationalize and can even create paralysis by analysis syndrome. However it is the beliefs you have stored in your subconscious mind (the most powerful computer of all) that is raising emotions within you. This mind does not rationalize. Have you noticed that there are people you can do anything for them and they will still be unhappy?. You just cannot make them happy?. That should give you a clue that the happiness is based on your beliefs.

     

    First step to happiness is to stop looking at others to make you happy. Instead focus that energy on yourself. Know yourself. Find what makes you happy. Maybe it is having tea with friends, or listening to music, or doing an activity that you enjoy. Once you find it, incorporate it everyday in your life. Take time out of your very busy day for yourself. By being happy you are not only helping yourself but you are helping everyone interacting with you. Others will feel happy in your presence. You will be spreading the energy of joy wherever you go and that is so uplifting. The more you are happy, the easier life becomes. Even a simple chore done by a happy person is a joyful activity. Happiness multiplies your positive energy bank thousand fold. Every smile on your face coming from your heart is a beautiful seed you are sowing in your energy field. It will grow and multiply your happiness.

     

    Yes, we all have events happening in our life that creates grief, trauma, pain etc. Time does not heal these memories, That to me is the worst belief created by society that 'Time heals things'.  Time only hides it from your conscious awareness. Since it still resides in your subconscious mind, it is impacting you every moment. It is limiting your ability to be happy. In these cases take professional help to release the negativity. A holistic healer or hypnotherapist can help you. By learning from this event and releasing the negativity you are increasing your ability to feel joy, to feel happiness again. 

     

    Bottom line, make happiness a priority in your life. "It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy that makes happiness". Enjoy living. You are responsible for your life. Once you accept that, your life can change for the better.

  • Light Pollution - know its effect on your health

    Most of us have heard about water pollution, food pollution but have you heard about Light Pollution? In this article we will discuss what this is and how it impacts our health.


    We are part of nature and our body is inherently geared to adapting to nature's cycles, weather patterns, day and night, seasons and more. Over the decades we have allowed ourselves to move away from nature cycles and create our own bubble of comfort, little realizing the harmful effects it has on our health. In moderation the body finds a way to adapt to our unnatural environment but it is when we go in excess that our body starts showing signs of dis-comfort, dis-ease. Our bubble of comfort includes air-conditioning, heater, artificial light, un-seasonal eating of fruits, vegetables, synthetic clothes and more. 

     

    Many people are not aware of the negative effects of being constantly inundated with artificial light, especially in the evening hours when natural darkness actually contributes to rest and rejuvenation, as well as the body's ability to create and regulate specific important hormones.

     

    A high degree of artificial light leads to light pollution. Over lighting causes many negative repercussions. Over lighting actually DECREASES visibility. Our eyes are naturally designed to be dark adaptive, which means the pupil opens appropriately for the amount of light that is present. When areas are over lit at night, the pupils never become dark adapted, so areas around bright lights are much more difficult to see, which actually reduces safety. This affects the natural body clocks called 'Circadian Rhythms'.  Circadian Rhytms are a 24 hour day/light cycle that strongly effects all physiologic processes in all living organisms.



    In the scientific article Missing the Dark: Health Effects of Light Pollution,http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2627884/ , the author points out that there is ongoing research on specific negative effects on humans, including increasing insomnia, depression, cardiovascular issues, and disturbing evidence that light pollution may be linked to increases in tumor growth, as well as the obvious effect of interfering with sleep patterns.

     

    Scientists are investigating the link between these health issues and the fact that artificial light interferes with the body's natural production of the hormone, melatonin. Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland during the dark hours, and acts as a trigger for a wide range of biologic activities, including offering protection against the development of cancer and tumor growth.

     

    Richard Stevens, a professor and cancer epidemiologist at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut, says light photons must hit the retina for biologic effects to occur. “However, in an environment where there is much artificial light at night—such as Manhattan or Las Vegas—there is much more opportunity for exposure of the retina to photons that might disrupt circadian rhythm,” he says. “So I think it is not only ‘night owls’ who get those photons. Almost all of us awaken during the night for periods of time, and unless we have blackout shades there is some electric lighting coming in our windows. It is not clear how much is too much; that is an important part of the research now.”


    On 14–15 September 2006 the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) sponsored a meeting that focused on how best to conduct research on possible connections between artificial lighting and human health. A report of that meeting in the September 2007 issue of EHP stated, “One of the defining characteristics of life in the modern world is the altered patterns of light and dark in the built environment made possible by use of electric power.” The meeting report authors noted it may not be entirely coincidental that dramatic increases in the risk of breast and prostate cancers, obesity, and early-onset diabetes have mirrored the dramatic changes in the amount and pattern of artificial light generated during the night and day in modern societies over recent decades. “The science underlying these hypotheses has a solid base,” they wrote, “and is currently moving forward rapidly.”


    Some of the things you can do is to practice seeing in the dark. Do it for short intervals of course being careful of your movements so you don't hurt yourself. Initially it would be difficult but soon you will regrow your ability to see in the dark.

     

     

    Limit exposure to too much lighting at night. Use darker shades to protect street lights from coming into the room. See if you really need night lights or can you keep a flashlight close to you in case you need light in the night. Do your own research. And if you find some good tips do share with me.

  • Understanding Chakras and Aura: Energy Body

    Few weeks ago we talked about our body being made of energy, discussion on Chi, Prana, Chakras and Reiki healing. Let’s understand the Chakras/ Aura in some detail and why it is important for us to know about this.

     

    Our body has hundreds of Chakras. Chakras are spinning wheels which absorb prana or life force energy from the environment and release negative energy out of the body. The seven major chakras are located along the spine to the top of the head. Each of the chakras has specific functions to make the body healthy and psychological functions to make the mind healthy. These 7 chakras are aligned in straight line and act as a combined gear system. Malfunctioning of any one chakra will impact the other chakras due to gear system of functioning. When all chakra are aligned and working well we enter a state of eternal bliss. Also known as enlightenment, nirvana.

     

    So how does knowing about chakras help us? By understanding the functions of each chakra we can know which of our chakra are having issues and go about correcting it. Our issues normally start in our thoughts, followed by emotions. When we don’t take action to correct our thoughts and emotions, the body starts giving us messages by bringing dis-comfort or dis-ease in parts of our body. When we still don’t pay attention to these messages, then our physical body starts to manifest disease, aches, pains, illness. The physical body is normally impacted last. Let’s learn about the bodies. There are four major bodies, the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical body. One can subdivide each of these bodies in more layers but for our discussion we can stay at the level of the 4 major bodies.

    Physical Body: We can see our physical body with our eyes and so we believe we have a physical body. Physical body is made of matter which we can see and energy which we cannot see. Our other bodies we cannot see with our eyes as they are made of energy alone and not matter. Hence their existence is not well known. However we can infer their existence. The other bodies create an energy field around the physical body and are known as a person’s aura. Now we have cameras that can provide photographs of a person’s aura/ energy field.

     

    Mental Body: We all have thoughts. We have roughly 66,000 thoughts in a day. Thoughts are energy waves. We can refer to all the thoughts in our mind as our mental body. Thoughts create a subtle energy layer around our physical body. All of the thoughts we have had since birth which are not resolved float in our mental body. Thoughts that we repeatedly have form what is called as thought forms. Thought forms are clusters of energy and seen as blobs around the body by clairvoyants.  Negative thought forms are seen as grey or darkish blobs. Positive thought forms are beautifully colored energy clusters.

    Emotional Body: We all have emotions. We are very well aware of our feelings and emotions even though we cannot see them. We can refer to all our emotions as our emotional body. Emotions that are not resolved (understood well and released) continue to float in the next subtle layer of our aura. Each layer of the aura interpenetrates all other layers. Hence out thoughts affect our emotions and vice versa.

     

    Spiritual Body: We live our life based on some values. Based on our values we judge things happening in our life and we take action. We create behavior patterns. Most of us don’t reflect on our values and so our behavior and thought process can be scattered or inconsistent. For example you may have a value of say honesty. Since you don’t pay attention to this value, your actions can be honest at times and dishonest at other times. If you were aware that this is the value by which you want to live your life, you will become conscious of every action you take and see that it aligns with your value. We can call our values as our spiritual body. If we don’t have strong values this body will be weak. As all bodies interpenetrate a weak spiritual body will affect your thoughts, emotions and ultimately physical body.

     

    We live an auto-pilot life going about our day in a robotic fashion. Learning about chakras and their functions can be one way to awaken to what is not working right in our life and then taking a focused approach to resolving it. This will help to clean up our various bodies. In a holistic approach to health, a holistic life coach or therapist will work on all layers of your body to create harmony of thoughts, emotions, values and physical health. 

     

    We can go through life by tacking one issue after another. This approach makes life really difficult as issues mount up as we cannot resolve them fast one by one. Alternatively you can take a different approach to going through life. I call it the top down approach. You can learn to cleanse and clean your energy body, your chakras and aura and this can help you to go through life in harmony. With a healthy energy body, you will have healthier relationships, increased ability to manifest abundance, feeling of happiness, lots of positive energy, creative ways of resolving issues, healthier and younger physical body.  In other words less issues to work on one by one.  

     

    Some actions you can take are:

    1.     Learning Meditation. It is not easy for most people to learn meditation. Takes years of practice. I have found that self hypnosis is easier to learn and brings you to the same alpha and theta wave lengths of the mind. I have been practicing meditation for years before I started hypnotherapy practice. I realized with self hypnosis I can enter a deeply relaxed state within minutes. With meditation it takes me 30 to 45 minutes at least to enter that state.

    2.     Tai Chi, Yoga, Qigong and other similar practices helps to move your energy fields and release them via these exercises. A really good teacher in these modalities can train you to connect the mind body and bring about harmony between the two.

    3.     Learn energy healing modalities such as Self Hypnosis, Reiki, Pranic Healing, Shamanic healing, Sound therapy etc. Not all of us have time to learn this as we all lead a busy life. Also we can hire people to help us balance our energy field. It’s just like one cannot learn to be a plumber, a carpenter, a handy man as it is not in our interests. And that is okay. We know how to hire experts in these areas to help us so we can go about our life doing what we like best. You can find healing practitioners to help you keep your energy fields clean.

    4.     Find a spiritual practice that resonates with you.

  • Energy Body

    Last decade or so we have been hearing a lot of people having cancer. This is surprising to me as we have spent decades of research on cancer and yet it appears cancer is spreading faster than ever before. So what is going on in our bodies? To understand this we need to look at our body in another light.

    Our body is made of atoms and molecules. Science has proven conclusively that atoms are not just particles but they are energy waves. We have seen diagrams of energy on EEG machines, sine waves going up and down. The number of waves per second is called the frequency of the wave. So our body is an energy body and all principles of energy apply to it.

    Even a table is an energy body as it is composed of atoms. So what is the difference between table and living human body? In the table the atoms are vibrating at a fixed frequency and so the table does not change form over time. 

    In living human body there is another very subtle energy that is flowing and vibrating the atoms of the physical body. This subtle energy can be called chi, qi, prana, soul, higher consciousness and so forth. I am going to call it prana in this article. The name does not matter. The prana energy superimposes on the physical body atoms. 

    Human beings have thoughts. Each thought is an energy wave. Now we have computers which can translate the thoughts and use it to control functionality of the computer. This helps people who are paralytic and cannot use their hands/ body. They can use computer by fixing their thoughts on the functions they want the computer to do. Since our thoughts keep changing, the energy also changes. Hence in humans the combination of chi energy, physical body energy and thought energy all intersect and our energy changes dynamically unlike the table. Negative thoughts create low frequency energy. Positive thoughts create high frequency energy.

    Let us learn one more aspect of our body. Where does the prana or chi energy come from? What happens when a person dies?. The prana energy leaves the body. The physical body continues to exists but since the subtle prana energy has left the body, the body no longer has consciousness. The prana energy is a divine energy. It comes from a source outside the body. You can call the source as universal consciousness or soul. As long as prana flows in our body we are alive. For simplicity lets assume that the prana enters our body from the top of our head. As it flows through the body it charges several batteries in our body to store the energy and supply it to various functions, organs, tissues in our body. The batteries are called as Chakras. Chakra is a Sanskrit indian word which means spinning wheels. There are 1000’s of chakras in the body. However seven chakras are the most popular and they reside from the top of the head to base of spine.

    Each chakra is a vortex of energy. It absorbs prana positive energy and throws out negative energy. Each chakra supplies energy to specific parts of the physical and emotional body. All these chakras are linked to each other in a gear system. Any malfunctioning of one chakra affects all other chakras. When all the chakras are aligned and working well we are in a state of eternal bliss.

    For example the basic chakra is a spinning wheel at the end of the spine. It is associated with proper functioning of the skeletal structure, teeth, large intestine, kidneys, blood. Emotionally it is connected to our survival needs, to our fears and insecurities. So when we are in a state of fear or feel threatened, this chakra is impacted negatively. Basic chakra’s ability to absorb prana energy and to release negative energy decreases. It starts spinning slowly. Over time if this is not corrected it can manifest as dis-ease or dis-comfort in the associated physical functions such as blood issues, kidney issues and so forth.

    Every cell in your body is made of atoms. Every atom in your body is storing energy. When we suppress our negative feelings, hold grudges, have chronic fear or anxiety, the cells are affected as they are holding lot of negative energy. This creates blockages in the flow of energy in your body. Long suppressed negative emotions start affecting the functioning of the cells and the cells begin to reproduce abnormally. This can create cancer and other issues in the body.  The adage that time will heal is not true at all.  Time only buries our memories deeper into our subconscious mind giving the illusion that those memories no longer exists. These memories still float in our energy field and impact us every moment.

    Our cells hold the energy of all our experiences (collection of thoughts) from the time we are born. And for those of you who believe in past lives, the cells hold memories of all past lives. That is why hypnotherapist can regress you back and help you to recollect root of issues you are having so you can release these memories/energy.

    Being on Earth implies we will have positive and negative experiences. Our body is affected by the pesticides in the food, electro magnetic waves around us, negative people we interact with, negative thoughts we have and more.

    So how can we improve our physical, mental and emotional selves?. One of the ways is with energy healing. Reiki energy healing is one such modality. A Reiki Practioner channels a very high frequency spiritual energy through their body and channels it into your energy body. Negative energy creates a low frequency wave in our body. When we superimpose a high frequency wave (reiki energy) over a low frequency wave, the net result is a relatively high frequency wave.

    When Reiki healing is done, the high frequency reiki energy superimposes on the negative energy in your body and transmutes the negative energy. In other words, the negative energy is removed and positive energy is replaced. Reiki healing can remove blockages from your energy body, improve the functioning of your chakras. This helps you to heal at all levels of your mind, body and soul.

     

    I believe Reiki healing should be part of your maintenance cycle. We take our car for maintenance as we know that is important or car will malfunction. Our body is an extremely powerful machine and it is important that we take good care of it. Whatever level of health you are in today, you can definitely benefit from Reiki healing. You can even heal pets and plants. You can clean your space with Reiki energy. Why wait for dis-ease or dis-comfort to happen in your physical body? Why not be preventive?. And if you are facing health issues whether emotional (stress, anxiety, insecurities, fears etc) or physical, you can benefit a lot from using Reiki as a complementary therapy.

     

    Dressing and Sing (1998) found that among cancer patients, Reiki brought about significant levels of pain relief, anxiety and depression reduction, improvements in sleep quality, relaxation, and general well-being. This effect was stronger in men than women. These benefits remained when checked after three months. Among abdominal hysterectomy patients, Reiki helped reduce pain and anxiety, particularly in a preoperative setting (Vitale and O’Conner, 1998).

     

    Reiki is becoming an increasingly accepted presence in hospitals and clinics. (The Center for Reiki Research website lists 70 institutions at the time of this article that include Reiki in their offerings.) It is seen as an effective and cost-reducing method to improve health outcomes and quality of care. Hospital staff, such as physicians and nurses, is adding Reiki treatments to their work. Scientific validation of Reiki’s effectiveness has helped bring this method to the mainstream, where it is able to aid patients in all realms, including those with mental health challenges.
